Community Engaged Learning 2016
Islamic Center of Ewing
|
For two weeks in April, 2016, I worked with three of my peers in conjunction with an Islamic Art History class. We volunteered for two Sundays in April at The Islamic Center of Ewing, teaching a lesson on Persian carpets to students from middle to high school. The students engaged in a discussion about Persian carpets and the history of how and why they were made. Afterwards, the students created their own carpets by making a loom and weaving with colored yarn.

Artmaking Day 2015
Trenton Artworks
|
In April 2015, I had the opportunity to design an activity for Artmaking Day at Artworks in Trenton, NJ. A free event open to the public, Artmaking Day featured several activities for visitors of all ages and skill levels.
I organized an activity to mosaic an old, unused bench. Depending on the age of the students, they could either assist in cutting tiles, or adhering tiles to the bench. The design was pre-determined and very simply drawn out on the bench prior to Artmaking Day. As a result of the activity, Artworks decided to create an outdoor garden near the entrance to their building, with the bench as the inspiration for and focal point of the space. For more information, please see the full lesson plan. *Note: the lesson plan is written as if to be taught in a k-12 classroom. The activity was modified for Artmaking Day. |

Mural at Trenton Artworks
In the Spring of 2014, my advanced painting class had the opportunity to work with local Trenton artists over the course of the entire semester, culminating in four murals that are now on permanent display on the exterior of Artworks in Trenton. The project was lead by our professor, Gregory Thielker. We collaborated with leaders of the Trenton Art Community to get an understanding of what it means to be an artist in this community. Two of my peers and I created a digitally-rendered image of Will Kasso Condry - a highly recognized muralist in the community.
Each of the four murals measure 6'x10', and were created by groups of three and four students. I am incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to participate in such an amazing event. The murals were originally intended to be installed for only several weeks - however the staff at Artworks were so pleased with our efforts that they are considered permanent installations, and were added to Trenton's Official Public Art Map.
